Election Address

Commodore Gareth Derrick is a former naval officer whose appointment in command of the Royal Naval and Royal Marines Reserves completed in 2013. He has deployed on operational tours in submarines and on land in both the 1991 and 2003 Iraq wars. Graduating with a Master’s degree in International Relations at Cambridge University in 2004, he served as a diplomat in the British Embassy Tokyo from 2007 – 2010, where he worked with UK and Japanese Ministers to secure high-level security co-operation between the two countries.

Gareth says "My career with the Royal Navy has taught me that you have to fight for the things you value most. Today's fight is about the kind of society we want in South East Cornwall and across Britain. Help me to ensure we build a society for the many, not the few."

Regularly meeting and talking with many residents and families across South East Cornwall, Gareth is quite clear on what are the challenges for the next government;

“South East Cornwall has suffered cruelly under the Tories. Our health, social care and schools have been starved of funds. We desperately lack affordable, good quality homes for local people to rent or buy, and we lack the investment needed in our region to provide quality long-term employment. When I say I'll fight for the people of South East Cornwall, it's not just a slogan. It's a promise.

We must also build a prosperous Britain outside of the EU. I will work hard to ensure we genuinely take back control of our fisheries, retain our valuable export markets and protect our farmers' livelihoods. It is vital too, that workers' rights are protected. We must not simply cut and run from Europe leaving South East Cornwall worse off all round.

I pledge to support our Armed Forces and Veterans too. The Tory government has cut the Royal Navy to the bone, and our Royal Marines are under threat. This puts national security at risk, threatens so many of our high quality jobs in this area, and undermines our heritage. Let me be your voice to protect what we hold dear.  I look forward to your support at this crucial election.
