A Labour manifesto for South East Cornwall

A new approach to NHS and Social Care

The Tory’s plans to shut hospitals and minor injury units will limit your access to health care. Labour will halt the closure of hospital units and fully review the chaotic STP plans, re-designing NHS and Social Care services around patient need, not the money available. Only Labour will stop the ever-increasing privatisation of health under the Tory policy of “push the NHS to breaking point”.

Better Jobs and Infrastructure

Labour will ensure better investment in quality jobs, infrastructure and industry to build a high skilled, low carbon economy in the south west that leaves no-one behind. We will also end Zero Hours Contracts to bring security at work for all, and introduce a £10 National Minimum Wage.

Secure Homes for local People

Labour will ensure that new homes are built to be truly affordable for local people, with at least half of them as Council Houses. We will also provide additional support for private renters by introducing rent controls, secure tenancies and a Charter of rights to tenants.

Good Training and Education for all

Labour will completely review the unfair Tory funding formula for schools and promise that no school will be worse off.  We will introduce free school meals for all primary children, and ensure that everyone gets a high quality education. There will be no more Grammar Schools under Labour. We will also ensure genuine quality apprenticeships and adult skills training are available.

Better Public Transport

Labour’s plans to progressively re-nationalise the rail network and introduce publicly owned bus networks will ensure that there are more services that provide good transport at a reasonable price across Cornwall and beyond.

Supporting and strengthening our Armed Forces

Labour in government has always properly funded our Armed Forces. But after seven years of Tory government, defence expenditure is at 20-year low, and there are no plans to put this right. Defence capabilities are diminished just when we need them most in this unstable era. Labour will properly review defence spending to provide a balanced, capable force that is fit for purpose.

 More Police for Safer Communities

Labour promises to introduce 10,000 more police officers, committed to the role of community policing.

Building a Prosperous future outside the EU

The Tories want a free hand to cut and run from the EU which could make Cornwall worse off all round. Labour will avoid a chaotic EU exit strategy to ensure we take back control of our fisheries, retain vital export markets and protect our farmer’s livelihoods. It’s vital too that we will protect worker’s rights and future investment funds for the south west.
